Talk Title:

From Governance Debt to Governance-by-Design: A Lineage-Guided, Cost-Aware Blueprint for Sustainable Enterprise Lakehouses

Abstract:

Enterprise data platforms increasingly treat governance as a compliance afterthought — catalogs and lineage are bolted on after pipelines are already in production, and schema drift or semantic mismatches are typically discovered only once bad data has already propagated downstream. This keynote reframes governance as a first-class engineering and sustainability concern, arguing that retroactive governance is not just a data-quality risk but a measurable driver of wasted compute, energy, and cloud spend.

Drawing on real-world SAP-to-lakehouse migration patterns, this talk introduces two complementary frameworks: LiGCoP (Lineage-Guided Cost and Provenance Governance), which captures lineage and attributes compute cost natively at pipeline write-time rather than reconstructing it after an incident; and SLSB (SAP-to-Lakehouse Semantic Bridge), which validates the semantic intent of ERP-to-lakehouse field mappings — not just their data types — before a pipeline ever runs. Simulation results show substantially faster drift detection and reduced downstream reprocessing when governance signals travel with the data rather than around it.

The talk closes by positioning governance-by-design as a concrete lever for sustainable computing: every reprocessing cycle avoided is compute and energy that never had to be drawn, making disciplined data governance as much an environmental and cost-efficiency practice as an architectural one.
