Intelligence in Defence--New age of technology

Abstract:

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already shaping modern warfare. The AI in defence is opening and addressing a whole new world of applications. The AI advantage is not only being used to optimise the existing performance of the military platforms and systems, but also the decision-making of the forces based on computational complexity. 

Recently, a military operation-- Operation Sindoor-- conducted by the Indian defence has exemplified the AI in decision-making. 

Our vibrant software industry and growing start-up ecosystem have contributed immensely to the rapid progress in AI applications. The growing focus of the Government on the defence sector will further stimulate the development of AI-enabled solutions for the services. The roadmap for the development of AI-enabled applications in the Defence sector covers areas in military platforms,  systems, surveillance, training and simulation,  multi-sensor data fusion, etc.

Profile: 

Manish Kumar Jha is a Defence Editor and a security expert. For more than two decades, he has covered more than 35 countries worldwide on the ground for national and international media. He served as a Deputy Editor in the Indian Express Group, Financial Express, Business world, BW Defence, DNA Newspaper, and prestigious international media, including the Japanese Press and Geopolitical Monitor.

He is the distinguished author of a book on military policy with Indian and international patent copyrights. He has also published research papers and book chapters in national and international venues.

Currently, Mr Jha leads and hosts the national program on key policies, including foreign affairs, Defence, and Economy, on Sansad TV (Government of India). He is also a columnist (opinion editorial) for the Times of India.

Mr Jha is also the Consulting & Contributing Editor to SP’s Land Forces, Aviation & Naval Forces. Mr Jha is a Senior Visiting Fellow & Editorial Advisor at India’s leading military institution- the United Service Institution of India (USI)—the national think tank of the Indian Armed Forces (since 1870). He is also associated with the Ministry of Defence (MoD)’s Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA).
