Autonomous Delivery Systems and the Future of Retail Logistics
Abstract:
The rapid growth of e commerce has increased demand for parcel delivery, making the last mile the most expensive and least efficient stage of retail logistics, often representing nearly half of delivery costs. To address these challenges, retailers are exploring autonomous delivery systems including autonomous vehicles, drones, and delivery robots to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and meet rising expectations for faster and more flexible delivery.
Several real world deployments highlight this transition from experimentation to operational use. Walmart and Gatik operate driverless middle mile delivery routes in Arkansas, Walmart and Wing provide drone delivery services in Dallas within about 30 minutes, and 7 Eleven partnered with Nuro to test autonomous delivery of convenience goods in California. These initiatives demonstrate how autonomous technologies are being integrated into retail logistics networks.
The economic motivation is significant. Autonomous vehicles and drones reduce reliance on human drivers, improve route optimization, enable continuous operations, and lower fuel consumption through electrified fleets. These systems can also extend delivery access to underserved areas while supporting sustainability goals by reducing emissions. Consumers increasingly benefit from faster delivery options such as same day and near instant fulfillment.
Despite this progress, several barriers remain including regulatory uncertainty related to roadway and airspace governance, concerns about safety and privacy, and infrastructure requirements such as charging stations and drone launch hubs.
This session will examine the technological, economic, and operational factors shaping the evolution of autonomous delivery in modern retail logistics.
