Architectural Renaissance in Cloud Computing: Unifying IaaS Foundations and Serverless Horizons

Abstract:

Cloud computing has advanced into a transformative phase, defined by an architectural renaissance that unifies the robustness of established IaaS foundations with the agility of emerging serverless paradigms. This talk positions the cloud stack as a continuum—virtual machines, containers, microservices, and functions—coordinated through orchestration, service mesh, and event backbones to deliver elastic, cost-aware, and policy-governed platforms. It explores how modern platform teams combine IaaS reliability (control, isolation, compliance) with serverless agility (event-driven scale, operational offload) using patterns such as function-per-event, containerized microfrontends, and stateful sidecars for latency-sensitive services. The session highlights the role of AI-assisted operations (AIOps), SRE practices, and platform engineering in automating release, resilience, and runtime optimization across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. It also addresses real constraints—cold starts, vendor lock-in, observability gaps, and data egress costs—and proposes mitigations including portable interfaces (OCI/Knative/OpenAPI), edge offload, warm pools, FinOps guardrails, and zero-trust baselines to strengthen enterprise adoption. Looking ahead, the session explores intent-driven orchestration, policy-as-code, and AI copilots for operations as the next layer of abstraction, enabling platforms that are self-optimizing, resilient, scalable, and auditable by design. This perspective offers a pragmatic roadmap for unifying IaaS and serverless into a cohesive, future-ready cloud architecture that accelerates delivery while strengthening reliability, security, compliance, innovation, and long-term cost efficiency.
