Securing the 5G Era: Emerging Threats, Architectural Challenges, and Strategic Defenses

Abstract:

The rollout of 5G networks marks a major shift in global communications, unlocking high-speed, low-latency connectivity for applications ranging from autonomous systems to smart infrastructure. However, the same advancements introduce a broader and more complex cybersecurity attack surface. This session delves into the core security challenges presented by 5G, including the risks associated with virtualized network functions, distributed edge computing, network slicing, and increased dependency on third-party hardware and software. Based on real-world infrastructure experience in highly regulated environments, I will outline practical defense strategies such as AI-assisted anomaly detection, secure service orchestration, and isolation of critical components. The session will also cover how organizations can implement a layered, standards-driven approach to proactively address threats while enabling innovation across sectors like finance, healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation.
