E-Commerce vs. Traditional Retail: A Data-Driven Comparison of Profitability and Sustainability

Abstract of Talk:

The retail industry is evolving through two main models: e-commerce and traditional retail. This article uses a data-driven approach to compare them, focusing on profitability and sustainability. E-commerce is rapidly growing globally, while traditional retail still holds a strong presence despite facing challenges. Profitability differs in cost structures, with e-commerce benefiting from variable costs, scalability, and diversified revenue streams. Traditional retail deals with higher fixed costs and operational limits. In terms of sustainability, e-commerce and brick-and-mortar stores impact the environment differently, particularly in packaging, carbon emissions, and waste. Growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products highlights the need for both models to adopt sustainable practices. This comparison provides insight into their strengths, weaknesses, and future viability.
